The International Day for Monuments and Sites was proposed by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) on April 18th, 1982, followed by UNESCO adoption during its 22nd General Conference in 1983.

The International Day for Monuments and Sites also known as World Heritage Day is an international observance held on April 18th, aimed at promoting awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage of humanity, their vulnerability and the efforts required for their protection and conservation.

The celebration marks different types of activities, including visits to monuments and heritage sites, conferences, round tables and newspaper articles.
There are currently 1,199 world heritage sites. They are divided between 933 cultural, 227 natural, and 39 mixed sites.
