Vigyan Setu Foundation has one of its objectives to sensitize and create awareness among one and all regarding human and animal health. On the occasion of World Health Day, we bring out this piece of information.
Fifty six years ago, in 1945 to be more precise, diplomats met to form the United Nations, wherein one of the points on agenda was to set up a global health organization. It was on 07th April 1948 when constitution of World Health Organization came into force, when during first World Health Assembly it was decided to celebrate 07th April as World Health Day, which came into effect from 1950. Celebration of World Health Day not only marks the founding of World Health Organization but also draws worldwide attention to global health.
The ambit of working of the World Health Organization encompasses the following six areas;
Promote Development – in order to break the link that exists between poverty and poor health and overall improve the health status of the given population.
Foster Health Security – by reducing health risks from outbreaks of existing, emerging, re-emerging and mutating diseases.
Strengthen Health Systems – in developing countries, where many health systems are inadequate, by way of making the provision of funding, access to drugs and relevant technology, data collection systems and trained staff.
Harness Information, Research and Evidence – for setting health priorities, strategies and measuring results, and in consultation with leading health experts, providing authoritative health information.
Enhance Partnerships – by working closely with many health organizations, globally, to improve or enhance the work of these organizations by encouraging them to use their evidence based practices and follow their technical guidelines when implementing their health programs.
Improve Performance – by implementing results based management, which provide clear results and goals which can be measured on a regional, country or international level.
With these goals in mind, every year, World Health Day, revolves around a theme. Likewise, for the year 2021, the theme is Building a Fairer, Healthier World
COVID-19 pandemic brought the entire humanity at standstill, looking out for one stop solution. The entire world has been made to see the great divide of those who have and those who have-not. Certain sections of the globe had been able to live healthier lives and had better access to the health services than others, owing to the situations they are born, grow, live, work, and age.
On the other side, there are others who not only struggle to make ends meet, but also fewer opportunities to access employment, housing, or even education. This section experience gender inequality and have minimal or no access to safe environment, optimal nutrition, and clean drinking water, leave aside food security or health services.
Hence, through the present theme of World Health Day, a clarion call is being made to ensure that everyone has living and working conditions conducive to good health. Today, when COVID-19 has hit all the countries hard, its impact has been harshest on those communities which were already vulnerable, who are more exposed to the disease, less likely to have access to quality health care services and more likely to experience adverse consequences as a result of measures implemented to contain the pandemic. Thus, on this World Health Day, let everyone of us ascertain that every global citizen is able to access quality health services; when and where they need them.
During this COVID-19 crisis, let us all pledge to stand by World Health Organization and support its commitment to ensure that everyone, everywhere, can realize the right to good health.
